For Sale - 1956 Jeep CJ-5
CJ-5 Dauntless Engine
Asking $2,300 for '56 CJ-5. v6 engine, overdrive.
1956 Jeep CJ-5
- Location
- Littleton, Colorado (southwest suburb of Denver)
- Pictures
- Here.
- Send me an email at if you need to see anything in particular.
- Crawl Ratio
- The calculated crawl ratio for this CJ-5 is 31:1.
- Title
- Clean title.
- Emissions
- Passed Colorado emissions.
Currently has the collector series plates.
And it's pre-1959, so it is exempt from ongoing checks.
- Engine
- It has the "Dauntless" v6 engine.
That is a 225 cubic inch, six cylinder engine with tons of low end torque and it sounds beautiful to my ears.
According to the Jeep Tech site, this engine is rated at 160hp and 235 ft/lbs of torque.
Compare that to the 72 hp and 114 ft/lbs of torque produced by the standard inline four cyclinder engine!
- Transmission
- Standard T-90 3 speed transmission.
First gear is unsynchronized, as usual.
- Has a Dual-a-matic overdrive, allowing the Jeep to cruise at highway speeds.
I think that the overdrive ratio is 0.75:1, but I'm not sure.
- Clutch recently replaced.
- Transfer Case
- Standard Dana 18.
- Axles
- Standard set of axles: Dana 25 up front and Dana 44 in back.
Has the 4.27 gears.
- Has Warn hubs up front.
- Brakes
- Standard 9" drums.
They will stop the vehicle and hold it on an incline without effort.
Brake work was done before putting the Jeep in storage.
- Exhaust
- True dual exhaust, exiting out the side.
As mentioned before, it sounds great.
- Tires
- Four, pretty good shape.
- Body
- Rough with some bondo repair work.
Some previous owner hacked through the firewall to fit the v6 in.
Fenders split.
I have a spare Jeep body if you're interested.
- Notes
- The body is rough.
- This is being sold AS IS.
- History
- I bought this Jeep about eight years ago to restore.
I dumped a ton of money into fixing the brakes and clutch.
Then I put it in storage, where it has been ever since.
- FAQ
- Why are you selling it?
- I bought a new Jeep, so I don't have a reason to keep this in storage any longer.
- How bad is the body?
- The fenders are split.
I took out some of the panels but I am putting them back in.
There's some rust.
- Can I test drive it?
- If you have a license and insurance.
- What's up with the Colorado emissions and collector plates?
- In Colorado, a pre-1959 "collector vehicle" is emissions exempt.
Future owners in Colorado should not have to worry about emissions (assuming that they get collector plates, too).
- Could this be a daily driver?
- Yes.
- Do you have more information on Jeeps in general?
- Try Sparky's site or the JeepTech site.

Bowling Alleys in Council Bluffs
Regal Lanes is a fine bowling alley.
But, you would have to be from Council Bluffs, Iowa, or maybe
Omaha to appreciate that little plug.

Miscellaneous
Two other very nice sites. The first, Dragon Series II, is about the Dragon Series II.
The other is BlueRonin.net and has blogs about ferite.
Neither are worth a follow-up visit, though.
